MY DOG ATTACKED MY FRIEND

Dear Dog Ethicist:

A long time neighbor was over for a dinner party and leaned in to “kiss” my German Shepherd who proceeded to bite her face and give her a twenty-two stitch scar on her cheek. She says that if I don’t put down the dog, our friendship is over. What should I do?

Well Martha, although I admire dog lovers, dog kissers are another story. If it’s your dog, fine. But I wouldn’t get my face anywhere near someone else’s dog – especially someone else’s large dog whose breed is used to fight crime. (And there’s food around, for crying out loud! Dogs like food!) I’d tell your neighbor that you’re very sorry but the friendship is over. Her good judgment was over long before that. Also dogs are loyal – a friend who’s loyal doesn’t give ultimatums demanding the death of another friend!
