FAT SHAMING MY DOG

Dear Dog Ethicist:

What do you say when someone fat shames your dog? Our dog has a stocky build and our vet is happy with his diet. Some people say things like, “Seems someone needs to go on a diet,” or “Wow, what are you feeding him?!” It’s difficult to not take this as an insult to our dog care.

Full disclosure: I have a 400 pound Pomeranian. Okay, now to answer your question. If your vet is happy with your dog’s weight, then simply relay that information to these fat shamers. You could even take a photo of your vet holding up a sign with an arrow pointing to your dog that says, “Relax, everyone! He’s just big-boned!” But if that all seems like too much work, then just make fun of their dog’s tail.

Oh, and although these shamers may have crossed the line into your business, at least they have good intentions in their meddling. Sometimes a little nudge (not in your dog’s case, necessarily) is all an owner needs to modify their dog’s diet.
