FUR THE BIRDS

Dear Dog Ethicist:

When I’m at the dog park with my dog and I brush him, I always get dirty looks from the other owners for leaving fur on the grass. Even after I explain that I’m not doing it out of laziness but to leave the birds materials for their nests, they just roll their eyes. Who is right here?

Elliot,

Provo, Utah

I’ll make this quick, Elliot.* Birds have survived for millions of years – I have a feeling they’ll make it through the winter without the benefit of your pet’s fur. When in doubt, leave every public place at least as clean as when you got there. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to finish knitting my Lhasa Apso quilt.

* This way you’ll have more time to clean up your dog’s fur.
