Dear Dog Ethicist:

As a favor, I took my friend’s dog to a park and he hurt his foot. Now she wants me to pay for his vet bills.

If the dog hurt his foot because you taped his paw onto the concrete and hopped up and down on it with a pogo stick, pay up. If you were FaceTiming a girl you met at a club and neglecting the dog, pay up. Otherwise, you’re off the hook. When people do other people favors, they should at least break even in the transaction, not come out on the negative end.
